Tidal Energy Systems: An In-Depth Look

Tidal energy, a renewable alternative, converts the potential, kinetic and/or hydrodynamic energy of water into electricity.  Tidal power is the only form of energy that is derived directly from the relative motions and positions of the earth-moon and earth-sun systems.  Changes of water levels and associated tidal currents are due to the gravitational and centrifugal forces exerted by the earth, moon and sun.  The magnitude of the tide is the result of the changing positions of the sun and moon relative to the earth, the effects of the earth’s rotation, local ocean or river basin geomorphology and configuration of coastlines.  Tidal power is based upon the flux of the tides, using significant tidal variations to produce electricity.  The stronger the tide, either in water level height or tidal current velocities, the greater the potential for tidal electricity generation.  A significant advantage of tidal power is its predictability, as the size and timing of tides can be predicted very efficiently.
